I woke up this morning and was preparing to go to work when I discovered that one of Long island finest, rapper/one of #badboy legends, Craig Mack, died at the age of 46 from heart failure.
This truly saddens me as Hip Hop lover and as an Emergency Physician (ER Doctor) because I’ve evaluated and treated many patients with this disease at the emergency department, especially patients of African descent. And the outcome isn’t always great. I also have several family members suffering from #heartdisease. Hip Hop is certainly facing a health crisis.
According to the American Heart Association, #africanamericans are disproportionately affected by heart failure with a very high prevalence at an early age. Hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease are all too common in African Americans ; predisposing us to heart failure. But it can be overcome. The predominant risk factor is hypertension and aggressive treatment may reduce the incidence and consequences of heart failure amongst our people. PLEASE visit your Primary Care Physician for preventive care.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friend, @djscratch. RIP #prince of Bad Boy Keep the #flavainyourear in Heaven. #americanheartassociation #cardiology #emergencymedicine
